Creating your own version of CircuitPython for the SWAN is very easy now, it should not take more than 15 minutes.
You can create a ready-to-use development environment with a few clicks in Github. The one-time setup takes about 10 minutes and is fully automated. The actual compile+build takes about three minutes.
