It sounds to me like it could be related to the I2C pullup resistors, which is the “typical” reason I2C communications fail. Did the problem start happening after a change in the hardware setup?
Please check which I2C devices include their own I2C pullup resistors. If there is more than one device with I2C pullups, try disabling them on all devices bar one.
