Startnote/Notecard carrier option

Hi, referring to the Starnote Starter Kit, the Notecard cellular(/wifi) “Add-on” offers a number of ‘carrier’ options (i.e. LTE-CAT-1 NorthAmerica). Is there documentation describing how to determine the most appropriate choice? And possibly the differences between them?

regards, Rich …

Hey @richf - You can use any Cellular, Cell+WiFi, or WiFi Notecard with the Starnote, depending on your specific use case. Choosing the most suitable Cellular option depends on factors such as:

  • Network Type: Do you need your cellular Notecard to support CAT-1 (Wideband) for higher data rates and better coverage, or LTE-M/NB-IoT (Narrowband) for lower power consumption?
  • Deployment/Supported Region: If you’re deploying in the US or North America, the NA Notecards are typically the best fit. For deployments in the EU, the EX Notecards are recommended. For most other regions, the GL Notecards are the preferred choice. We provide a list of Covered Countries for each Notecard in its datasheet.

If you’re based in the US, I personally recommend choosing one of the Wideband (WB) options as we’ve seen better coverage compared to Narrowband (NB) options:-

  • NOTE-WBNAW – If you need Wi-Fi functionality alongside cellular connectivity.
  • NOTE-WBNAN – If Wi-Fi functionality is not required.
